Alternative to Employment

Alternative-to-EmploymentMENTOR Oregon’s Day Programs, also known as Alternative to Employment, offer a wide variety of structured activities, social interaction and skill-building opportunities that enrich the lives of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  Our center-based programs create an atmosphere that offers structure and excitement for program participants who look forward to seeing friends and familiar staff members each day.

Individualized Programs and Activities

Our modern locations are designed to meet a range of individualized skills.  We place a priority on community involvement and provide an array of engaging activities to help individuals grow and reach their goals while developing new hobbies and interests.  Depending on each person’s Individualized Service Plan (ISP), he or she may take part in goal-driven classes or activities involving:

  • Reading
  • Arts & crafts
  • Computer training
  • Physical fitness
  • Cooking
  • Personal appearance

We also provide opportunities for individuals to hold jobs within our day program—giving them a sense of ownership and pride in their work.  Program participants can earn wages for services such as shredding paper or clerical work.

Therapeutic Service and Support

Our staff provides personalized support and individualized training to boost individuals’ confidence and help them learn new skills.  In addition, we encourage adults to participate in group activities where they can interact with other members of the day program and the community.  We incorporate structured learning and fun to help individuals reach personal goals that include:

  • Developing vocational skills
  • Becoming aware of personal safety
  • Strengthening communication skills
  • Learning behavior strategies
  • Improving independent living skills
  • Increasing mobility

We also offer active treatment, such as sensory stimulation, to individuals whose needs are more involved or those who exhibit challenging behaviors.  Adults can participate in group treatment exercises or one-on-one therapy sessions, based on their Individualized Service Plans.

Whether individuals live with family, in residential homes or in their own homes, MENTOR Oregon offers transportation services to ensure they can attend the day program of their choosing.  We help each person find a day program that is right for them and meet goals that change their lives for the better.
